InLiving earns a permanent place on ‘A Place of Your Own’ course

Grassroots Learning is using InLiving as engaging learning materials for InRoads at SHAP’s ‘A Place of Your Own’ course.SHAP Logo

Since Sept 2009, this pre-tenancy training course is aimed at young people aged 16 to 25 looking to find a place of their own for the first time, or struggling to maintain existing tenancies. Its purpose being to help such people develop the skills and knowledge necessary to live independently and successfully. The course is designed to increase young peoples’ knowledge and skills using relaxed, informal and ‘hands-on’ learning activities. Learners completing the course can gain an OCN certificate in Developing Skills for Independent Life.

As part of the course, each young person is given their own copy of InLiving to take home and play,  either on their own phone, or on a loaned phone provided by Grassroots Learning and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing. InLiving scenarios contain many of the topics covered within the course, so the game is an excellent way of delivering key information, allowing young people to learn by playing, in an engaging way.  The game’s new questionnaire system also allows players to test their knowledge as they play and giving appropriate feedback on incorrect answers.

Originally run as a pilot, the course has now received funding to run on a regular basis within different areas of Kirklees through 2010 / 2011.

Grassroots Learning see this as an excellent opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of InLiving and gain feedback from young people, informing the future development of the game. At the end of the course, a feedback session is held allow the young people involved to give their opinions on the game and suggest new scenarios and other improvements.

New Loan Shark and Burglary Scenarios

InLiving is constantly being updated and improved in terms of the game’s graphics, playability and content. One of the distinct purposes of InLiving is to promote financial inclusion amongst young people in helping them to be prepared for independent living. Financial exclusion is defined below:

“Financial exclusion describes the situation of people who cannot or do not access and use appropriate financial products and services.”

(Blake and de Jong, 2008:9)

Loan Shark Scenario

Loan sharks can pose a very real and serious threat to members of the community, while approaching victims under the guise of friendship and familiarity. Some loan shark victims have been physically maimed and raped by the loan shark. Some victims have even committed suicide as a result of the misery that the loan shark has imposed on them. Loan sharks get their victims as a direct result of financial exclusion, through individuals’ inability to access affordable credit, as well as through the loan sharks’ approaching them on their own doorsteps and in their own communities with instant access to cash.

A new in-game scenario introduces young people to the threat of loan sharks in a safe and fun environment, while pointing out the danger that they pose…

Home Contents Insurance

Over recent years, National Housing Federation Statistics have shown that social housing tenants have a markedly low take-up of home contents insurance. In 2007 it was reckoned that almost 75% of Housing Association tenants did not have home contents insurance.

Further research notes that one of the main reasons for young people’s failure to take up home contents insurance in their own properties is a matter of perception, as they may not see the need for such and may also be confused or distrustful of insurance products.

To help address this issue of perception, InLiving now includes a new in-game scenario in which the game player is invited by their Housing Officer to take out home contents insurance. If they fail to do so, having received the appropriate reminders, then they may just learn why doing so would have been a good idea…

New In-Game Questionnaire System

InLiving Questionnaire

Our new and innovative in-game questionnaire system makes InLiving so much more than just a game for both our clients and the game’s players alike.

As game players encounter different scenarios within the game they will have the opportunity and incentive to give feedback on such both in terms of what they learned from playing the game and the extent to which they enjoyed the game playing experience.

This feedback is gathered on databases for our clients, providing them with valuable measurable data.
