InLiving is constantly being updated and improved in terms of the game’s graphics, playability and content. One of the distinct purposes of InLiving is to promote financial inclusion amongst young people in helping them to be prepared for independent living. Financial exclusion is defined below:
“Financial exclusion describes the situation of people who cannot or do not access and use appropriate financial products and services.”

Loan Shark Scenario
Loan sharks can pose a very real and serious threat to members of the community, while approaching victims under the guise of friendship and familiarity. Some loan shark victims have been physically maimed and raped by the loan shark. Some victims have even committed suicide as a result of the misery that the loan shark has imposed on them. Loan sharks get their victims as a direct result of financial exclusion, through individuals’ inability to access affordable credit, as well as through the loan sharks’ approaching them on their own doorsteps and in their own communities with instant access to cash.
A new in-game scenario introduces young people to the threat of loan sharks in a safe and fun environment, while pointing out the danger that they pose…
Home Contents Insurance
Over recent years, National Housing Federation Statistics have shown that social housing tenants have a markedly low take-up of home contents insurance. In 2007 it was reckoned that almost 75% of Housing Association tenants did not have home contents insurance.
Further research notes that one of the main reasons for young people’s failure to take up home contents insurance in their own properties is a matter of perception, as they may not see the need for such and may also be confused or distrustful of insurance products.
To help address this issue of perception, InLiving now includes a new in-game scenario in which the game player is invited by their Housing Officer to take out home contents insurance. If they fail to do so, having received the appropriate reminders, then they may just learn why doing so would have been a good idea…
